On January 12, the EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) recognized accomplishments of several of its partners for excellence in innovation and creativity, success in promoting project development and achieving environmental and economic benefits. The award was presented during the 13th Annual LMOP Conference and Project Expo in Baltimore.
Kent County was presented with the award for LMOP Community Partner of the Year for the South Kent Generating Station in Byron Center. The project is a joint venture between Kent County and Granger and supplies power to Consumers Energy. The county owns the gas collection system and the building that houses the electric generation system; Granger owns the gas processing and electric equipment.
South Kent Generating Station produces 3.1 megawatts of electricity—enough to power 1,900 homes with renewable energy.
